Loose covers can be a blessing or a curse. On the one hand they can be removed and cleaned more thoroughly than tight fit upholstery coverings but if they are not cleaned professionally and correctly the consequences can be problematic – that’s where our expert upholstery cleaners can help!
If loose fabric covers are manufactured correctly, hopefully, all will be well. The reality is, however, that items are not always made to the highest standards and outcomes can be disastrous. So, in order to protect your investment in your home check these points before going ahead.
Firstly, and most importantly, the fabric should already be flame retardant to comply with current legal requirements or they should be fitted over a flame retardant interliner.
Secondly, the fabric that has been used to make the covers should have been pre-shrunk before making to prevent any shrinkage at the point of cleaning. Shrinkage can occur to the extent that the covers will no longer fit the cushions or furniture bases.
Thirdly, if the covers are piped with a piping cord that is not pre-shrunk then there is s risk of this contracting and the result can be a puckered or gathered appearance and a poor fit to the cushions or furniture bases.
Lastly, as always, remember that about 90% of quality soft furnishing fabrics are designated by their manufacturers as “Dry Clean Only”. Therefore, it is essential to find a specialist soft furnishing cleaner to carry out any cleaning works for you. It is important to find a long established and trusted company to do the job properly…………….and that is not your local High Street garment cleaner. It is a specialist area and if you have spent a lot of time and money in choosing your high quality covers it makes financial sense to look after them. A specialist firm will also give you better quality results and assurances over outcomes. Look for trustworthy endorsements and accreditations. Remember that many of the “rave reviews” on the web are produced by the companies themselves.
Look for take off and refitting as part of the service so that your chosen supplier has total responsibility for the job.
It is also worthwhile considering having a fabric protector finish applied after cleaning to keep your covers looking at their best by helping to resist future soiling and stains.

I always have my curtains and upholstery cleaned by Pilgrim Payne. They do a fantastic job, are reliable and trustworthy. They are not cheap but are worth every penny. In particular I want to praise John who gets out stains that I didn't think were possible to remove. On his recent visit he transformed my 7-year-old white sofa so that it looked like a new purchase!
