After the arrival, and the long awaited departure of “the Beast from the East” we are all feeling rather the worse for wear. The long, slow commute into work or to school or shops followed by the return journeys to our homes make summer seem a long way off.
March 1st is, meteorologically speaking, the first day of spring, although looking out of the window onto the snow covered roads and landscapes it does not look like an English spring. However, a change in the weather is just around the corner and it will be welcomed by all as our lives get back to normal.
The effects of the weather are seen and felt in many different ways. One that is apparent is the effect it can have on our carpets and rugs. No matter how carefully we try to stop it the damaging effects of snow, slush, grit and dirt impact on our floor coverings. This is an impact that not only effects appearance but also leads to the intrusion of grit, salts and other things that can adversely affect the piles of our carpets and rugs. So, it makes sense to take a look around and take stock of what winter has done. It is time to plan for restoring the cleanliness and hygiene of our floor coverings.
Spring is the time for spring cleaning and shaking off the last vestiges of winter so, as March begins, it makes sense to look forward to brightening and refreshing the home once the spring weather arrives…………….hopefully in a week or two!!
A clean carpet is not only nicer to look at, it is also more hygienic, especially important if small children play on it. It will last longer too, once the abrasive grit and particulate matter have been thoroughly cleaned away by periodic, deep cleaning. Soft furnishings are like our cars, they require regular servicing to keep them in good condition. They are an investment worth protecting.
As with carpets, valuable rugs also require thorough periodic care if they are to look their best and have long lives. Many rugs wear out sooner than necessary due to lack of regular restoration.
Whenever you decide to deal with your carpet and rug cleaning needs make sure that you pick a long established and trustworthy company to carry out the work for you. Look for membership of the N.C.C.A. (National Carpet Cleaners Association) and a business address that actually exists………….many do not!! Many are merely “accommodation addresses”, often in your local area, designed to fool you. In many such cases your valuable rugs may be given away to unknown third parties to clean. Choose a specialist with a long history of carpet and rug care and make sure that you choose a company who will visit first to give a free, written estimate before any works are considered.

I always have my curtains and upholstery cleaned by Pilgrim Payne. They do a fantastic job, are reliable and trustworthy. They are not cheap but are worth every penny. In particular I want to praise John who gets out stains that I didn't think were possible to remove. On his recent visit he transformed my 7-year-old white sofa so that it looked like a new purchase! And he magicked away two unsightly spots from a cream curtain. He is Mr Magic Man!!
